Teacher Locks Herself and 19 Pupils in Closet as Crazed Gunman Raids School

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare their son or daughter might be at a dangerous — and potentially fatal — situation like a college shooting. More and more, but these tragic incidents continue to occur and threaten the lives of many.

The recent shooting Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, reluctantly claimed the lives of 17 people, lots of whom barricaded themselves in classrooms to conceal from the gunman.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, made his way through hallway after hallway using his AR-15 gun, injuring those in his / her path. As they concealed, students texted their loved ones and submitted to social websites begging for support.

And though a few had lost their lives, those who made out it now utilizing social media once more not in a request for help, but to thank those that stored them through the harrowing time.

1 teacher, specifically, that’s being recognized as a fanatic is Language Arts instructor Melissa Falkowski.

Falkowski was together with her 19 students when the episode began. Acting quickly on instinct, she hid the students in a cupboard as the gunman roamed the classrooms and halls out.

“I was able to place 19 children in the cupboard with mepersonally,” Falkowski later said. “This is the worst nightmare that could occur to you.”

Now, however, her students have taken to societal websites to thank their teacher because of their bravery and calm attitude during the horrific event.

“Being among those 19 children for countless hours was past surreal,” said pupil Emma Dowd. “Melissa Falkowski, the instructor, was among the couple that kept me quiet and secure. I’m beyond thankful for teachers like her.”

Dowd and other students mentioned the Florida educator kept them from getting panic attacks as they all wondered if the shot was going to come into the room and locate them.

“It was my instructor,” said pupil Delaney Tarr. “I had been in that cupboard. Having to feel that fear and see all of those people think they’re going to die is something that no individual ought to experience.”

Reports say that Falkowski initially huddled at the corner of the classroom with her students, but made the decision to proceed into the cupboard as an extra “barrier” of protection.

The group hid in the little room for nearly 30 minutes until a SWAT team arrived.

“I made the decision to transfer the children into the cupboard,” Falkowski said. “We’d training in a month ago and we spoke about these different situations and things to do. It was quite obvious that it was not a drill. I decided that [the cupboard] was just another layer between the active shooter.”

But at the close of the day, Falkowski — together with her students — confessed that there is no way to truly prepare somebody for the horrors of a busy shooting.

“We could not have been more ready for this circumstance, which is exactly what makes it very frustrating,” Falkowski said. “We did all that we were supposed to do. Broward County Schools has prepared us for this circumstance and to still have numerous casualties, at least for me, it is quite emotional.”
