Pupils discuss school Safety concerns

MADISON, Wis. – Just over a week after the Parkland, Florida, shooting security is top of mind to pupils.

“It probably disturbs everybody here but with the safety that we’ve, I believe we feel considerably more powerful,” Memorial High School junior Jordan Smith said. 

Smith and fellow pupil Keyshawn Webster are convinced in their school’s security steps,  but understand after a struggle happened only this week , requiring officers to participate, events can act quickly. 

“It’s always in the back of my mind. You don’t know what could happen. One little struggle could become a big brawl that could result in firearms and you don’t know,” Webster said.

This month, several struggles between pupils and unfounded threats made on interpersonal media have happened at schools across the Madison Metropolitan School District, for example a student who had been detained after bringing a loaded gun to La Follete High School this week.

Madison is not alone.  Colleges in Baraboo, Beloit, Waterloo, Orfordville and Verona have investigated threats since the Florida shooting.

“If there was a major crowd, I would always work to see what is happening just in case it had been among my friends. But if there’s a huge crowd, I try to get the closest security guardian or instructor merely to be sure I am safe,” Webster said.

Whether threats are plausible, SSM Health psychologist Kathleen Hipke explained the consequences can cause pupils to have stress, restlessness or make trouble focusing on school.

“It’s increasing anxiety for those kids and teens and also families of really the question of,’Am I safe?'” She said.

Hipke suggests parents and teachers speak with pupils about how they are feeling and ways to help them feel secure.

“We do not want any of our young folks to be carrying about these fears and anxieties independently and sense stranded with them,” she said. “Get a sense of what their perceptions are. Make space for queries, correct truths and when it’s possible, bring this conversation back to exactly what can you do in order to feel more healthy,” Hipke stated.

It’s important to continue to check in with students and discuss how they are feeling on a regular basis, even if they don’t introduce indications of being anxious or concerned about their security.

Into snapping turtle Facing students of feeding live puppy, Middle school teacher accused

PRESTON, Idaho (WSVN) — An Idaho school district is investigating after a science teacher was accused of feeding on a live, ill puppy to a snapping turtle in front of a group of pupils.

According to Fox 13, deputies said animal activist Jill Parrish filed a police report later another teacher told her Robert Crosland perpetrated the action.

“Allowing children to watch an innocent infant puppy scream as it is being fed to a creature. That is violence. That isn’t fine,” Parrish said. “There’s a whole lot of humane affairs you can do. Feeding a live animal to a reptile isn’t humanist and it is not okay.”

As stated by the school district, the episode occurred after classes were dismissed.

Reaction to the news has been mixed with a few while others feel it went too much.

Over 3,000 have signed an online petition confirming Crosland’s action while the other petition calling for his termination has accumulated over 100,000 signatures up to now.

“When it was a immature pup that was going to die anyhow, Cros[property] is very much circle of life,” says parent Annette Salveson. “If you are not fine with it, leave the room”

According to the Associated Press, the turtle in question was euthanized after authorities seized it. Snapping turtles are an invasive species in Idaho, and they need a permit.

The Idaho Statesman accounts that Crosland may face a misdemeanor charge due him with the turtle without a permit.

Since news of the episode, three schools in the area have stepped up security due to “vague threats.”

Teacher on Leave After Questioning Whether School Would Let Pro-Life Students Walk Out, Too Much

Julianne Benzel told CBS13 that she guesses she got in trouble for suggesting that colleges administrators that condoned the student walkout might be practicing a double standard.

“And so I just kind of used the example which I know it’s really controversial, but I understand it had been the best example I thought of at that time,” stated Benzel. ” [If] a group of students nationwide, or perhaps locally, determined ‘I wish to walk from school for 17 moments’ and proceed from the quad area and protest diplomatic, could that be permitted by our government?”

Her point was seen by her pupils, and the conversation–which happened last weekwas fruitful, according Benzel. On Wednesday, the teacher received a call that she had been put on leave.

Officials didn’t specify exactly what the problem was, but offered the following announcement:

A Rocklin High School teacher was put on administrative leave due to several complaints from students and parents regarding the instructor’s communications concerning today’s student-led civic engagement activities.

Students’ free expression rights should outweigh the nation’s interest in gearing up kids daily, and letting them protest gun violence seemed. However, if it’s OK to protest, then it also ought to be OK to have a whole discussion about the protest. Provided that no student was disciplined for political speech, it appears to me to get Benzel to maintain trouble or like there’s little reason for parents.
